What it is
American Football is a team game played in short, planned plays. One team carries or throws the ball up the field to score; the other team tries to stop them. After every play both teams reset, so there's time to think and every player has one clear job. You don't need to know the rules to start: you'll learn them at training.
Tackle or flag?
| Tackle | Flag | |
|---|---|---|
| Contact | Full contact: players tackle and block. | No tackling: pull a flag from the ball carrier's belt to end the play. |
| Gear | Helmet, shoulder pads and sports kit. | A flag belt and sports clothes. No pads. |

A position for every body
Every position needs something different, so there's a place for you whatever your build.
- BigOffensive and defensive line
Strength and a low centre of gravity win the battle at the line on every play.
- FastRunning backs, receivers and cornerbacks
Speed turns a short pass or a gap in the line into a long gain.
- TallReceivers and defensive ends
Height and long arms catch the high ball and knock passes down.
- AccurateQuarterback and kicker
A steady arm or boot turns the team's plans into points.
- SmartLinebackers and safeties
Reading the play before it happens puts you in the right place first.
Is it safe?
- Tackle players wear a helmet and shoulder pads, fitted before they play.
- Coaches teach safe tackling and blocking technique before any full contact.
- Juniors play in their own age groups, against players their own age.
- Flag football has no tackling at all.
